About Angus
Angus is the cultural birthplace of Scotland, where the seeds of modern democracy were sown in the Declaration of Arbroath. Today its population is around 108,400.
With its wonderful scenery and quality of life, Angus is recognised as being one of the finest places to live in the UK.
The main towns in Angus are Arbroath (famous for its smoked haddock ‘Smokies’), Brechin, Carnoustie (celebrated for its historic golf course), Forfar (famous for its meat pies called bridies), Kirriemuir (birthplace of JM Barrie, author of Peter Pan), Monifieth and Montrose.
Some of the main benefits of living in Angus are its geographical features. An unspoiled coastline with long stretches of white beach, the picturesque Strathmore Valley and the spectacular Angus Glens, are all packed into an area of just 2,200 square kilometres.
As well as scenic beauty and economic prosperity, Angus also has affordable housing, extensive leisure facilities, good transport links and friendly people. Unemployment is around 3.0%, slightly higher than the Scottish average of 2.9%.Angus is home to some of the finest golf courses in the world including the world famous Carnoustie Championship Course, credited by Tiger Woods as being, “The most challenging, if not the finest, course in the world”.
Tourist attractions include Glamis Castle, the childhood home of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and legendary setting for Shakespeare's famous play 'Macbeth', near Forfar.
The Future
Community planning in Angus means working together to make the area a better place to live.
Planning involving the community, organisations and committees is being carried out in Arbroath, Brechin, Carnoustie, Forfar, Kirriemuir, Monifieth, Montrose, Sidlaw and Newtyle, and the surrounding rural communities.
Central themes of the plan are ways to improve quality of life, the economy, health and safety, community learning and the local environment.
