Business

Dependency on mining and defence has been reduced with the introduction of electronics and financial services. Other important industries include optoelectronics, oil and gas, biotechnology, chemicals, textiles and marine engineering.

Major employers in the area include Guinness, Sky TV, Bank of Scotland Visa centre and Marconi.

The rate of unemployment stands at 3.6%, nearly 30 per cent of which is in the manufacturing sector. The average house price in Central Fife is estimated at £63,693.

Scotland’s first direct ferry to Europe, from Rosyth to Zeebrugge, launched in summer 2002 in the area.

Fife's key advantages include a large labour supply within a 30-minute drive time and comparatively low labour costs. It also enjoys a strategic location in the Central Belt (the central lowlands of Scotland), with an excellent communications network and is well established as a location for business and tourism.
