About West Dunbartonshire

About West Dunbartonshire

From the outskirts of Glasgow to the banks of Loch Lomond, West Dunbartonshire is home to just over 93,000 people.

West Dunbartonshire covers an area of 70 square miles, from the beauty of Loch Lomond and historic towns, to the bustle of modern shopping centres and abundance of leisure facilities.

Loch Lomond is the single biggest expanse of inland water in the British Isles and is immortalised in the old Scots song 'The Bonnie Banks O' Loch Lomond'.

Ideally situated on the outskirts of Glasgow, West Dunbartonshire is in the enviable position of being free from city congestion, yet within easy reach of major national and international transport links.

The three main towns are Clydebank, Dumbarton and Alexandria. Glasgow International Airport is just 20 minutes away, and Prestwick and Edinburgh airports are also less than an hour’s drive away.

The Future

The area of Clydebank has a long and proud history of shipbuilding and engineering. Now Clydebank is being revitalised through the work of 'Clydebank Re-built'. This is an Urban Regeneration Company founded by Scottish Enterprise Dunbartonshire and West Dunbartonshire Council.

  • Revitalisation of Clydebank

The West Dunbartonshire Community Plan outlines a vision for the future of the area and was developed following extensive consultations with representatives from the private, public, voluntary and education sectors.

  • West Dunbartonshire Community Plan

Other projects in the West Dunbartonshire area include:

  • Kirkintilloch Initiative
  • Development in the Loch Lomond area
