About Stirling

About Stirling

Stirling is Scotland’s youngest city and the ancient site of many historical heroes, with a population of around 87,000.

Very much at the heart of the nation geographically, historically and emotionally, Stirling was Scotland's ancient capital, seat of Kings and parliament. Hollywood blockbuster Braveheart dramatically tells the tale of life 700 years ago when the Wars of Independence raged in Scotland.

Stirling is the third fastest growing area in Scotland and was awarded city status as part of Her Majesty the Queen’s Golden Jubilee celebrations in 2002.

The British currency term ‘sterling’ is derived from the town of Stirling. Originally, a mint in the town produced coins using silver from mines in the Ochil Hills.

It ranks 11th out of 189 UK towns and cities for its quality of life by 21-44 year olds. The rate of unemployment is just 2.9%.

Thousands of commuters travel to work in Stirling from a variety of locations, including Glasgow and Edinburgh.
