About Scottish Borders

About Scottish Borders

The Borders Region begins at the English border and has a population of around 106,000 people. It’s an area renowned for its rugged beauty and turbulent history. A largely rural area with good road links and a soon to be renewed link to the National Rail Network.

The region includes a number of unspoiled towns and villages such as Eyemouth, Hawick, Galashiels, Jedburgh, Melrose, Peebles and Selkirk.

The river Tweed offers some of the best fishing in Scotland and because of the area’s natural beauty, golf, riding, walking and cycling are amongst the finest in Scotland.

The Borders area celebrates its turbulent history with festivals that look back to the legendary battles over the borderlands and the days of The Borders Reivers (cattle thieves).

The pride and passion of the borders people also comes out in the game of rugby. For an area of only 100,000 people they have made a huge contribution the international game.

Each town has its own team and the area boasts a well-known professional team, also called The Borders Reivers.

The Future

The Borders is a sparsely populated rural area and as such relies on niche industries such as textiles, electronics, arts and crafts and of course agriculture.  The area’s natural beauty is also now leading to it becoming popular with the film industry!

Areas of economic growth for the future are:

  • Arts and Crafts
  • The Film Industry
  • Cashmere

The area will soon be re-connected to the national rail network through the Waverley Project:

  • Waverley Railway Project
