About Midlothian

About Midlothian

Midlothian begins south of Edinburgh and reaches down to the Borders region. It contains some of Scotland’s richest and most productive farmland.

The scenery includes rolling hillsides, mainly used for grazing sheep, and quiet lochs, often a stop off point for migrating geese.

The villages and towns of Midlothian are modern vibrant places with their own developing industries. However, it is also a place of great historical interest with numerous atmospheric castles, stately homes and churches. This includes the stunning Rosslyn Chapel, made famous by Dan Brown’s novel ‘The Da Vinci Code’.

There are 21 Conservation Areas in Midlothian. Dalkeith, Mavisbank and Borthwick and Crichton are considered to be ‘outstanding’. The area includes part of the Pentland Hills Regional Park and Hillend Country Park, which is famous for having the largest dry ski slope in Western Europe.

There are around 80,000 people living in Midlothian mostly in the main towns of Penicuik, Bonnyrigg, Dalkeith, Mayfield, Loanhead, Gorebridge and Newtongrange. The main villages are Danderhall, Roslin, Rosewell and Pathhead. The location of Midlothian makes it an ideal location for commuters to Edinburgh whilst retaining its scenic and rural character.

The Future

Midlothian is set to benefit from the new Borders to Edinburgh Rail Link that will pass through Shawfair, Eskbank, Newtongrange and Gorebridge. This will link to the National Railway Network and give the area an economic boost.
