About Dumfries & Galloway

About Dumfries & Galloway

Dumfries and Galloway is a well-known retreat for writers and artists. It boasts stunning views from Scotland’s most south westerly point to England, Ireland and the Isle of Man.

The population is around 148,000 with the largest town being Dumfries with a population of 31,600. The two other main towns are Stranraer with 10,800 and Annan with 8,300. The population density is 60 people per square mile compared with the Scottish average of 168.

The area is 70% agricultural land and 25% woodland. The local economy relies heavily on agriculture and forestry. Tourism is also a key contributor to the local economy along with a range of light industries.

Dumfries and Galloway offers the perfect base to go golfing, walking or cycling. The National Cycle Network takes in 130 miles of dramatic coastline and forests. There are over 1,300 marked trails for walkers, with a difficulty level suitable for everyone. Winter breaks are just as popular with dramatic winter scenery and plenty to do indoors.
