South Ayrshire covers an area of 422 square miles with a population of 122,600 people. Towns in the area are Ayr, Prestwick, Troon, Maybole and Girvan.
The area is mainly agricultural and there are many villages often in remote areas. There are woodlands and forests, and a long coastline and the whole region benefits from a mild climate brought in on the Gulf Stream breeze.
Well known for its golf courses including Royal Troon and Turnberry, which regularly stage the open championship, South Ayrshire has a long and interesting history including strong associations with Robert Burns.
There are also good road, rail, air and sea links including Prestwick International Airport, which is linked to a dedicated rail station.
