The area has a long history of textile manufacture, ranging from traditional lace making in the Irvine Valley to knitwear manufacturing.

Having a rich heritage, East Ayrshire has a significant tourism industry, with considerable potential for development that will contribute to the development of the economy.

Kilmarnock is the largest town with a population of 44,734 people. The main industries are light engineering and food and drink production.  Kilmarnock is famous for being the home of Johnnie Walker whisky. There are also a growing number of call centres including First Choice Travel.
