Scotland’s national poet Robert Burns spent much of his life in East Ayrshire. There are so many places that have some association with him, that it is impossible to forget the enduring appeal of this poet for Scots today and to visitors from all over the world.

The two main towns in East Ayrshire are Kilmarnock and Cumnock. Cumnock is known as the birthplace of the first Labour Party leader, James Kier Hardie. The people of the town are proud of the association with Kier Hardie and a bronze bust stands outside the town hall to this day. Textiles, the manufacture of fire engines and agriculture contribute to the economy of the town. It has a population of 9,091 people.
