Name: Lu Bai
Born: China
Region: Xi’an
Lu studied Management Science at Northeast University in China and was awarded her undergraduate degree in 2002. After graduation she started working as a journalist on the provincial TV station. Lu wanted to develop her career in television but felt she needed to broaden her horizons as well as improve her English language skills.
What she chose to study was also key her career planning “I chose Education as my major for two reasons. Firstly, I would like to produce educational programmes and secondly studying in the UK has become the hot option for more and more Chinese students so I was curious and wanted to experience it for myself.”
Lu researched her options through The Times Good University Guide and although she was offered places in Manchester and Nottingham she preferred to come to a smaller city so came to Scotland to do an MSc in Education at the University of Edinburgh – a 12 month taught postgraduate programme. The careers office at the university told her about the Fresh Talent Working in Scotland Scheme which would allow her to work for two years upon graduation.
Lu found work as an Educational Consultant with Xinlung Education, a leading Chinese educational consultancy that specialises in helping international students find places at British universities. Xinlung has offices in Edinburgh. Lu’s work involves helping students apply for the UK’s higher education system – “As a person who has benefited from the UK’s education system I feel proud that I can use the knowledge I learned here to service more people.”
Lu loves living in Scotland and especially Edinburgh with its beautiful scenery and peaceful environment. She’s enjoyed travelling around Scotland – her favourite place is Loch Lomond – but has also come to appreciate Glasgow as a dynamic and lively city.
She also hopes that her younger sister will soon join her. She is currently at the Northeast University of Finance and Economics and preparing for IELTS (International Language Testing System) so she can also apply to the University of Edinburgh.
