Name: Madhusudhanreddy Kollareddy
Born: India
City of origin: Nellore (Andhra Pradesh)
Madhu already had a BSc in life sciences before he came to Scotland in January 2005, to study for an MSc in Biotechnology at the University of Abertay in Dundee. It was not by chance that he chose Scotland – he knew that it was one of the best places to further his research in biomedical sciences and hopefully offer him the opportunity to be closely involved in the pioneering research and development going on in and around Dundee. Scotland is a world-leader in life science research and development and is home to 15 per cent of the UK's life science companies adding up to over 590 organisations employing 29,500 people. Indeed, Scotland continues to break new ground in almost every area of biomedical research.
The Fresh Talent Working in Scotland Scheme (FTWISS) has helped him achieve his goal. As soon as he finished his studies he began work as a Research Assistant with Cyclacel Ltd in Dundee. His job involved the screening and testing of drugs discovered by Cyclacel. It involves using many of the techniques he has learnt during his studies and that is important to Madhu: “I developed my skills here in Scotland and want to use them first here and be involved in core research in my chosen field so that when I go back to my own country I will feel a real sense of achievement and can offer so much more.”
Madhu has no doubt that he wouldn’t have achieved success in his chosen field without Fresh Talent WISS. He has also found the support of his course tutor and the friendly people in Scotland has really helped him settle here. “Scottish people respect those with a good educational background and who want to study further.”
Beyond work and study Madhu enjoys playing cricket in Strathmore Union and Perthshire league. “Playing cricket for Norwood Cricket club, Dundee, a well-known club since 1930, has helped me to be physically fit and to gather some important friends. I also play badminton on a regular basis after work at Dundee University Sports Club."
