"The first time was a joint bid with Robert Gordon Univeristy, Aberdeen College and Aberdeen City Council," explained Michele Theodule of the university's Careers Service.
"We used the funds to run an International Careers Fair.
"The second time around we wanted to do something that combined social and workshop-type events so we bid for funds to start a Fresh Talent Careers Club."
The club provides ongoing support for current international students and recent international alumni who are interested in participating in the Fresh Talent initiative.
"We want to give them the encouragement and information they need to stay in Scotland," said Michele.
"A lot of them were attracted to study in Scotland because of the Fresh Talent scheme so it's a chance to reaffirm what they want to do in a positive way."
Challenge Funds of £3,400 in 2006/07 and £17,605 in 2007/08 allowed the Careers Service to kick start the club and set up a website at www.abdn.ac.uk/freshtalent.
The club's activities are jointly organised and run by International Student Advisers who focus on immigration issues, and Careers Advisers who concentrate on helping the students understand the Scottish workplace and find jobs.
The club was launched at an official reception in a local venue where traditional Scottish stovies (a mixture of potatoes, onion and meat) were served, followed by a ceilidh.
"Although the Fresh Talent scheme is aimed at full international students, we also encourage short-term American students and European students to join the club," said Michele. "Having a good mix of students from all over the world helps to create a wide support network.
"And having alumni involved too means we can build up a good database of graduates who have stayed on to work. We can then invite them back to the club to talk to our current students and help answer their questions about working in Scotland. We've got employers lined up too, to come in and speak to the club.
"It's a lot of work but it's very rewarding."
Students can register to join the club at www.abdn.ac.uk/freshtalent where they can also access details about workshops, social events and other activities.
