Name: Charles Teddy Adupong
Born: Ghana
Age: 37
Lived in Scotland: Since December 2001
It was through his friends in Ghana that Charles Teddy Adupong first heard about Heriot Watt University in Edinburgh.
He had visited the UK several times before but had never lived in Scotland. So, with a BA (Hons) in accountancy and economics from Ghana already under his belt, he applied to take his MBA at Heriot Watt and started his course in 2002.
Charles commuted from Glasgow throughout the course, graduating in July 2004. He lived in Glasgow as he had found it easier to obtain accommodation there. He developed an affection for the city and its people and remained in Glasgow long after he graduated.
After graduating, Charles stayed in Scotland to work. He was a finance officer with Paisley Partnership Regeneration Company, a subsidiary of Renfrewshire Council. He was also accountant on a team working on a project at the British Airports Authority in Glasgow. He now has a permanent post as a Finance Manager with Sense Scotland, the charity for people with sensory impairments.
Happily settled with Sense Scotland, Charles is full of praise for his colleagues and friends in Glasgow.
He prefers to live in Scotland where the black minority is much smaller than it is in the south-east of England.
"I think it's easier for me living here than in a larger community of people from my own cultural background where it is more difficult to make any significant impact.
"And Scotland is a very nice country. I am very happy here and my wife and two kids love Scotland too. I have some good friends and colleagues and I want to stay for the foreseeable future."
