Name: Shu Wang
Age: 25
Born: China
Lived in Scotland: Four and a half years
After completing her education in China, Shu Wang decided that it was time to see some of the world but she also wanted to continue her studies. For a 20-year-old from China with limited English, Dundee did not appear to be an obvious destination, but this is exactly where she decided to settle.
Shu said: "Growing up in China, I was fortunate to have had the opportunity to continue my education to university level. However, Chinese qualifications are not as highly regarded in the international market as the western equivalents. I therefore looked into studying in the UK and was particularly attracted to Scotland.
"I eventually decided on Dundee University and moved to Scotland in 2001. Initially it was a huge culture shock moving from a developing country like China to Western Europe. Looking back, it probably took me about a year to become fully accustomed to my new surroundings.
"I spent my first three months studying in a language school to advance my English skills before starting university. This was the perfect environment in which to meet people, learn about the country and, of course, begin to understand the Scottish accent. It also provided me with the opportunity to see some of the beautiful Scottish countryside as well as some of the country's famous landmarks.
“After attending the language school I started university. There are always a lot of opportunities for international students to join various societies and clubs alongside their studies. I joined the Young Entrepreneurs Society in my third year and got elected as President one year later. The whole experience of being an overseas student is not only about going to lectures and exams. It also encourages you to drive your own life in the way that you want in an unfamiliar environment.
"Studying and living abroad helped me adjust to living on my own, and enhance my perception of different cultures and people. Of course, I have learnt how to cook for myself. Surprisingly, I've had no problem in finding traditional Chinese food as there are many specialist shops across the country.
"Since I arrived in Scotland I have been made to feel so welcome and I've made many great friends. I plan to stay in Scotland and hope to set up my own company working as a consultant helping Scottish-based businesses to trade in China.
"I have fallen in love with Scotland. Last year I took my parents on a tour of the Highlands and the Isle of Skye when they came over to visit - the scenery was absolutely breathtaking. I am also adjusting to the Scottish way of answering, 'How are you doing, my friend?' by replying, 'Not Bad, Not Bad!'"
