Poseidon provides a complete engineering service from conceptual design and field layout to construction, installation and commissioning.
The three engineers Poseidon recruited through Fresh Talent have been vital to the growth and development of the company, which provides subsea engineering support to the oil and gas industry including BP, Shell, Marathon, Total, Talisman, ExxonMobil and ConocoPhillips.
The subsea engineering business has grown rapidly from three to 28 staff since it was set up in Aberdeen by its Norwegian parent in 2005. Since then it has needed structural and subsea engineers to carry out engineering services related to the design and construction of offshore structures, such as conductor analysis studies for drilling rigs and platforms.
Poseidon consultancy manager Sarah Innes said: "The oil and gas industry is very short of engineers and structural engineering is one of the areas where there's a particular shortage of people, even of graduates. So it was very important for us to get recruits with the right skills."
The company advertised in the local press and received applications from three highly qualified international graduates who had applied to stay and work in Scotland for two years under the Fresh Talent: Working in Scotland Scheme.
Nigerian engineering graduate Charles Nnamdi Omartins had just completed an MSc in software engineering at Aberdeen's Robert Gordon University in addition to his B.Eng in Civil/Structural Engineering at the University of Nigeria and had a knowledge of structural engineering software that was invaluable to Poseidon.
Kiran Vinjam had a Bachelors in Engineering from the University of Madras in India followed by an MSc in computer-aided engineering from Edinburgh's Napier University, while Kaushik Deshpande, a B.Eng graduate from the University of Pune in India, had completed a Masters in Structural Engineering at the University of Dundee and had also worked for an engineering company in India.
"We're absolutely delighted with them," Innes said of the Fresh Talent recruits, who have all now received five-year work permits. "They're extremely hard-working, they fitted into the company very well and they're very committed to the company. We're currently focused on the UK market, but there's a lot happening in the subsea area in India and Nigeria and it will be useful to have that local input, knowledge and language when we expand into those regions."
Poseidon's team currently features eight nationalities, including Iranian and Australian naval architects, a Chinese Graduate Structural Engineer, a South African accounts assistant and a Norwegian subsea engineer.
Innes said: "It's great having such a diversity of people, because they all bring different outlooks and ideas on how to do things, which can only benefit the company as a whole."
