Working in Health

The National Health Service (NHS) is one of Scotland's largest employers and offers an incredible range of employment opportunities. There is also private healthcare and a host of alternative and complementary care jobs.

New recommended lists of occupations for which there is a shortage of skilled workers in the UK and Scotland were published in September 2008 by the Migration Advisory Committee (MAC), as part of the Committee's first major report.

 The full recommended UK list includes:

• Consultants and senior nurses in particular healthcare specialisms
• Skilled senior care workers

The recommended Scotland list includes:

• All of the occupations on the UK list, plus
•  Senior nurses in care of the elderly units
• Speech and language therapists
