The Scottish Government will offer the world's largest single prize for innovation in green energy in Scotland.
The prize will award innovations using wave and tide power.
First Minister Alex Salmond made the announcement at the world headquarters of the National Geographic Society in Washington, USA. The announcement was made as part of the Scotland Week celebrations in April.
Mr Salmond said: "The Saltire Prize is the Scottish Government's way of playing its part in inspiring a revolution in clean, green energy as the world enters a new golden age in innovation prizes.
"With the Saltire Prize, we hope to inspire scientists around the world to combat our most pressing challenge in finding a way to bring more forms of renewable energy online as quickly as possible.”
The Saltire Prize was inspired from other innovation prizes of the 20th century. The Ansari X Prize led to the first private spacecraft launch. Entrepreneur Richard Branson challenged scientists to think of ways to remove Carbon Dioxide gases from the atmosphere. It was called the Virgin Earth Challenge.
