Scotland's Racecourses

If you’re looking for a fun, family day out (hats optional), you can’t beat a day at the horseracing. Take a picnic and soak up the atmosphere!

Scotland has five racecourses: Ayr, Hamilton Park, Kelso and Musselburgh and Perth. There are two types of racing – flat racing, which takes place over a course without obstacles and jump racing, involves hedges or fences. Hamilton Park stages flat racing only, Kelso and Perth stage jump racing only. Ayr and Musselburgh racecourses stage both types of horseracing.

Ayr

Scotland's Grade 1 racecourse in Ayr in south west Scotland is undergoing a huge development, which will see it emerge as a world-class racing venue. The course is home to the Scottish Grand National in April and the Ayr Gold Cup Festival in September.

Hamilton Park

The only dedicated flat racing track in Scotland, Hamilton Park in the south west is best known for its evening race meetings.  The course has a stiff up-hill finish, which makes for exciting finishes. Currently undergoing £2.5 million refurbishment, this is probably Scotland’s most glamorous racecourse!

Kelso

Situated in the heart of the Scottish Borders in the south east of Scotland, Kelso is known as 'Britain's Friendliest Racecourse'. The log fires in the Grandstand are a homely touch and add to the relaxed atmosphere of the course. The track stages jump racing throughout the winter months from October until May.

Musselburgh

Historic Musselburgh Links has been a venue for horse racing since 1816. It is one of Scotland's two dual-purpose racecourses, staging racing all year round, on the flat in the summer and over jumps in the winter. The course is hosting 25 race days in 2008.

Perth

Located in the grounds of Scone Palace, Perth racecourse is one of the most picturesque of Scottish courses.  The racing takes place over jumps and the fun kicks off each year with the acclaimed three-day Perth Festival in April, rolling on throughout the summer. Other highlights include the Perth Gold Cup in June and the Gig at the Races in August.
