University Accommodation

If you are studying in Scotland, there are two main types of university accommodation:

• Accommodation provided by your education institution. These are usually halls of residence which can be catered or self-catering. Many institutions also own flats and houses in the local area and rent these to their students. Some institutions also have a small number of self-catering flats for students with families
• Accommodation provided by private landlords or external organisations, which you will have to find and arrange by yourself

If you are looking for a place to live, first ask the Accommodation or Welfare office, or the Students' Union at your university or college.

They may also have inspected the accommodation to check it is suitable and they can help if you have any problems.

Most rental properties are advertised in local newspapers and on the internet so this is a good place to look. 

College and university accommodation in a self-catering hall of residence or student apartment costs from £180 to £360 per month.  For students with families, a number of universities and colleges offer two-or three-bedroom family units at a cost of £450 to £550 per month.  In most cases accommodation provided by the institution has to be arranged before you come to Scotland. 

For private accommodation in a bed-sit or a room in a house or flat shared with other students you would pay from £200 to £380 per month.
