There's a lot going on in Scotland for families with regular festivals and permanent attractions running throughout the year. There's something for everyone to look forward to whether it's a high-tech science festival or a delightful rural country fair.
If your children love Thomas the Tank Engine look no further than Bo'ness and Kinneil Railway in West Lothian, with its fantastic collection of functioning steam trains. The trains run from April and there are lots of special events throughout the year including 'a day out with Thomas' plus seasonal events such as 'Steam 'n' Scream Weekend' and 'Santa Steam Specials'.

This historic castle is surrounded by loads of exciting rides and attractions, from the 'Captain's Wheel' to the 'Milk Churn' and the 'Twist 'n' Shout'. There is also the Ships Wheel Café for when you need some rest and refreshment.

The Science Festival has plenty to offer young families, with activities suitable for kids from ages 3 to 13 on offer.
There are loads of activities here from climbing into a giant nose or standing inside the amazing bio-bubble, to discovering a new world or becoming a CSI murder mystery detective. Events are full of fun with plenty of learning thrown in for good measure.

There's always something going on at Edinburgh's Dynamic Earth for families. They have a fantastic Kid's Club with interactive exhibits and hands on fun throughout. They also offer free membership to their Kid's Club Dina's Dynamos for 6 to 12 year olds.

If your family love the passion and drama of live entertainment look no further than Aberdeen International Youth Festival, a major summer attraction in the north east of Scotland.
Showcasing some of the best young talent from all over the world the Festival offers ten days of entertainment, music, theatre and dance, beginning with a grand parade through Aberdeen city centre.
There's also a summer school, projects, workshops and events especially for children.

Held around the wonderful Traquair country house this annual fair has a great family-friendly atmosphere. The house itself is one of the oldest inhabited and romantic in Scotland, once owned by kings and still home to the descendents of the Earls of Traquair.

Loads of hands on fun for all ages at this centre - explore how to use light, sound, position, touch, scent, heat and taste to uncover what's happening in the world around. It's the only science centre of its type in Europe focusing on the senses.
There are over 60 exhibits to help you explore the world of people and plants through your senses and take a close-up look at how humans and animals perceive their surroundings.
