Shetland’s population is made up of a diverse group of people, many of whom have come to the island from mainland Britain for work or looking for a different way of life. You can usually tell who grew up in Shetland because they will occasionally use Shetlandic words.
The oil and fishing industries dominate in the islands, but tourism, knitwear and food production are also important.
Music plays a significant part in peoples’ lives and brings everyone together. Many Shetlanders can play a musical instrument.
