About Moray

About Moray

Moray stretches up between the Highlands and Aberdeenshire from the Cairngorm Mountains to the coast of the Moray Firth.

The towns of Elgin and Forres are the largest and the whole area has a population of around 90,000.

Popular with tourists for the scenery and the whisky, the area is also home to two Royal Air Force bases at Lossiemouth and Kinloss.

Tourism is well organised in the region and there are various trails to follow. The whisky trail takes in eight of the most renowned distilleries in the region.

The coastal trail follows miles of unspoilt beaches past cliff top castles and delightful fishing villages.

The Future

Like many other areas in the north of Scotland, Moray is preparing for more people to live and work in the community.

The future of the region’s natural heritage, rural communities, economic development and housing in towns and in the countryside are all on the agenda in Moray. The Council have a strategic plan to deal with all of these important issues.

  • Moray Development Plan
The natural environment around the area is rich and varied. Protecting and maintaining it for the future is a high priority for action groups and the Council alike.
  • The Moray Firth Partnership
Protecting the natural, economic and social resources of the Moray Firth.
  • Moray Council Plan for the Environment (PDF)
  • Moray Flood Alleviation Group
